Through Second Career Training, I was given the opportunity to return to school to update my skills. My decision on a program was easy as my passion is Banking and Financial Services.

As part of the Second Career process, I had to investigate several Private Career Colleges as well as Public Colleges. I called and arranged to come in for an information meeting with the College Director. I was so impressed with the manner in which the director took the time to explain the school's objectives, programs, schedules and standards.

Staff and students at Access Business College in Toronto, Ontario come from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds, but everyone is like family. Access Business College is probably the best business school in Toronto. We all support and mentor each other. The staff is all very educated and knowledgeable.

Second Career Training is an Ontario Government education program that is specially designed to offer training for a new job, including financial support.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED FOR BARBARA OPOKA AND YOLANDA ALONZO!

Dear Access Business College,

I would like to thank you from the depth of my heart for the impact you have made in my life. Access has not only provided me with the fundamentals of understanding the business world, it has also taught me new skills and sharpened the old ones. I have studied among some of the most brightest and brilliant students, individuals that look out for one another in times of success as well as despair. I was taught by world top intellectuals. In essence, Access has become the very foundation of my success.

My life before Access Business College in Toronto was a spiral of job jumping, I didn't know where I fit, I didn't know what my career path was and most of all I didn't know how I was going to get there. Although I was experienced in specific areas of business, I also lacked some of the basic principals needed in order to succeed in the business realm, thus finding it a challenge gaining and keeping a job. I decided to go back to business school.

I chose Access Business College because it was a small private college so I know that my class sizes would not be that full, thus my teacher would be able to focus on the specific needs of each student. I enjoyed the way in which the family dynamic is part of the school structure. It felt as though everyone wants you to succeed and the students help each other attain the goal of success. Access business College, I thank you for turning my life around. I thank you for teaching skills that I will be able to carrying throughout the world. Thank you for being the reason that I have reached success in my life. What this college provides is far greater than any sum of money.

It has been a whirlwind year for Yolanda Alonzo. Her journey began on January 9, 2009 – the day she received a pink slip.
"At first, I was lost and didn't know where to begin," said Alonzo. "I didn't even know how to make a resumé after working for 15 years."

Alonzo decided to return to school. After a visit to an assessment office, Alonzo learned she was eligible for the Second Career training program. Access Business College caught Alonzo's eye after she completed research on three institutions, including public colleges.

"I was interested in Access Business College in Toronto because it was the right environment for mature status students," said Alonzo. "I could start any time of the year and would be able to finish the course of my choice within 10 months. It meant I could go back to the work force within a year."

Alonzo's Second Career application was approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in May 2009. She began Accounting and Payroll course classes on May 25 and finished on January 29, 2010. Her program at Access Business College included Microsoft Office, Financial Accounting, QuickBooks, Simply Accounting, Sage ACCPAC and Canadian Payroll.

"I learned the hands-on experience with the computer software but also the logic behind it," said Alonzo.

After passing the first segment of the payroll course, Alonzo started to apply for jobs. Her resumé landed on the desk of the Human Resources Manager for Girl Guides Canada – which lead to an interview for a position in the Finance Department. "I was very excited when I was invited for a second interview," said Alonzo. "After a week, I was offered the job in the Finance Department doing accounts payable and payroll. It was the best birthday and Christmas gift I received in December!"

Alonzo is looking forward to the opportunity at Girl Guides of Canada. She is grateful for all the people who have helped her in the past year.
